What Can I Do?
Tell Mike DeWine to veto SB1
March 27, 2025
Senate Bill 1 would devastate public higher education in Ohio. It would heavily restrict teaching on “controversial” topics, including climate change, electoral politics, foreign policy, DEI programs, immigration policy, marriage, and abortion. It would ban faculty strikes and meaningful tenure. Because of this massive intrusion on academic freedom, Ohio would lose faculty, students, tuition money, and jobs.
The bill has already passed the Ohio House and Senate. The last chance to stop it would be a veto by the Governor. Help us flood his voicemail and messages. You can call his office at 614-466-3555 or 614-644-4357. Or you can fill out his contact form.
Here’s a suggested script:
Hi, I’m [your first name] from [your town], and I’m calling to urge Governor DeWine to veto Senate Bill 1. It would wreck Ohio’s public colleges and universities. We would lose faculty, students, tuition money, and jobs. And Governor DeWine would be remembered as the one who could have prevented this disaster but didn’t.
What Else Can I Do?
Make your voice heard!
Flood your reps with your concerns!
Make calls! Make contacts!
WHEN YOU CALL, BE CLEAR, SPECIFIC, and POLITE – What do you want them to do and why? The intern who reads your letter and tallies opinions reads hundreds of these every day. Make it easy for them to understand your point. DO NOT expect a reply, but know that it still counts to help the rep learn which way the wind is blowing. If you have it, include specific information about public polls and/or some quantity of voters who share your views.
