Let's Take Back Ohio
If you’ve found yourself struggling to identify a “decent” Republican politician these days, you’re not alone. The contrast between the needs of everyday Americans and the actions of today’s GOP leadership has rarely been so stark.
While Trump and national Republicans push to end ACA premium tax credits and cut millions from the SNAP food assistance program, they continue spending taxpayer dollars on White House renovations, lavish gatherings at Mar-a-Lago, and even a $20 billion bailout to Argentina. These choices speak volumes about priorities, and they’re not aligned with helping working families.
Here in Ohio, the pattern continues. Despite a complete lack of evidence for widespread voter fraud, State Senator Andrew Brenner co-sponsored S.B. 293, legislation that would eliminate the grace period for mailed ballots, even those properly postmarked by Election Day. It’s yet another step in a nationwide strategy of voter suppression that would prevent legally registered voters from having their ballots counted.
Senator Brenner may be term-limited, but that doesn’t mean we can sit back. Ohio Senate District 19 is critical, and we need to rally behind strong Democratic candidates ready to defend voting rights and represent the people, not a party agenda.
Despite the GOP’s near-total control of state government, there are reasons for hope. This year, several candidates endorsed by our local party won key races for school board and city council. These local victories prove that when we organize, support strong candidates, and show up, we can make real progress, even in the face of one-party rule.
But to win statewide, we must expand our support for Democratic candidates for the Ohio General Assembly, governor, secretary of state, and other statewide offices. Ohioans have made their voices clear on issues like reproductive freedom and fair maps, and yet GOP politicians continue ignoring the will of the people. It’s time to hold them accountable at the ballot box.
