The next regular meeting of the Delaware County Democratic Party will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. at HQ in downtown Delaware. The biannual reorganization meeting will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Willis Education Center, 74 W. William Street, Delaware, Ohio, at 7:30 p.m.

CENTRAL AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
MAY 17, 2018

The meeting was called to order by Second Vice Chair Roger Van Sickle in the Chairman’s absence.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jerry Rhoades.

Roll call was made with a sign-in sheet. Those present were: Julie Houston, Greg Hankins, John Schmarr, Yvette Hanselmann, Ron Baer, Steve Schottel, Sam Kindred, Jerry Rhoades, Ruth J. A motion was made by Julie to accept the Secretary’s report and seconded by Aileen. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Greg to accept the Treasurer’s report and seconded by Spencer. Motion carried. Scholarships were awarded to Elena Faith Kellow and Mallorie Watts for $500 each. Also, John reminded us there will be a Democratic tent at the Sunbury Flea Market on Memorial Day, with the focus on candidates. Please sign up for a 2-hour shift if you have not already done so.

The Central Committee orientation breakfast will be held this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Delaware Township Hall, 2590 Liberty Road, Delaware. Speakers include candidates for Ohio Supreme Court, Melody Stewart and Michael P. Donnelly, candidate for State Auditor Zack Space, and local candidates.

Main Street Initiative will be held at OWU on June 2, 2018 for future candidates and those who wish to work on campaigns. To register, go to www.go.ohiodems.org/bootcamp .
The reorganization meeting of the party will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Willis Education Center, Room 212, 74 W. William Street in Delaware, at 7:30 p.m. Central Committee members who were elected in May will be sworn in. At Large members will be appointed if they have attended at least 3 meetings and voted D in the most recent primary, and if there is already a central committee person in their precinct. At large members can vote on the same things as a regular member, with the exception of voting for the new Chairperson. New officers will also be elected at this meeting.

Rand reported that he recruited 303 Democratic pollworkers at the May Primary election, while the Republicans only recruited 291.

Membership: Linda reported that we now have 200 members, with 37 being new.
Candidates and CC: The last meeting was held on May 3rd, and meetings will now be held monthly. ODP has hired a new field rep, Sara Gray Spurgeon, for us. The goal now is to connect people by geographic location which should make it easier to recruit future candidates.

Fund Raising: Catch a Rising Star will be held July 24th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Scioto Reserve Country Club. The main speakers will be Steve Dettelbach, who is running for Attorney General against Dave Yost. Danny O’Connor, our 12th Congressional District candidate will also speak. We will also hear briefly from our local candidates, Aileen, Louise, Corey, and Indu.

Julie also pointed out that membership is a form of fundraising, and it is now possible to make monthly donations on our website.

Website: Brian reported that the monthly newsletter is delayed to include information about outgoing Chairman, Ed Helvey. The release date of the new website is 6/21/18. A test group will meet for about 2 hours on June 14th to evaluate the website – contact Brian if you wish to be part of that group. Our current name is ohiodeladems.org, but the new website will probably have a different name.

The Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus is on hiatus until after the November election; however, activities such as phone banking is continuing. A fundraiser will be held for Louise Valentine by Tara Tulgar on June 8th at Elysium Tennis Club in Plain City. The main activity will be paddle tennis and you can check Louise’s FB page for more details. There will also be a kick-off reception and fundraiser on May 25th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the home of Christina and Michael Drummond in Powell.

Joyce Bourgault is having a fundraiser for Sherrod Brown at her family’s farm in Kingston Township. She will print cards if anyone would like to do a mailing.

The Young Dems will hold their 3rd annual BBQ in July. The group is not doing much at this time, but plan to recruit new OWU students in the fall when school resumes.

Events and HQ: A fundraiser for Kathleen Clyde will be held on June 6th, please see our FB page for details.

The office is open Tues. – Fri. from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and on Saturday mornings during the Farmer’s Market. Donna is considering opening the office on Mondays also as we get closer to the election. First Friday in May was enormous, and it was attended by Indu, Corey, Peg, Cathi, John Russell, Danny O’Connor, and Bill and Nancy Cline, among others. Donna said they heard many positive comments. The June First Friday will be Hidden Spaces and we expect a large crowd. Donna stated she could use help with refreshments and lemonade/water.

Corey Hoffman expressed thanks for voting for him, and he will be running against Kris Jordan.

Spencer reported that Louise Valentine received over 17,000 votes, an increase of 143%, and she is outraising her opponent, Andy Brenner.

Aileen reported that she and Indu are working together to raise funds in the Westerville area.
